INDUSTRIAL ROBOT WELDING: MEET THE YOUNG ENGINEER POWERING ADM’S NEW COBOT

ADM Pressings has taken a leap forward in manufacturing innovation with a strategic cobot welding investment of £65,000.
This new collaborative robot, or ‘cobot’ with welding capabilities, is set to significantly boost our automation in batch production, enhancing both quality and efficiency for our customers.
This isn’t the first time that ADM has invested in advanced robot technologies. Our customers are already benefiting from enhanced roller hemming capabilities and a fully industrialised ABB 2 station weld robot acquired in 2022.
[H2] WHY A COBOT? THE EVOLUTION OF INDUSTRIAL ROBOT WELDING
This latest investment has been driven by a key shift in industrial robot welding technology. Cobots have historically been used in lighter functions such as pick and place.
The new welding cobot, which ADM took ownership of in January 2025 following a successful trial in September 2024, represents a new standard. It offers greater flexibility at approximately one-fifth of the cost of a traditional industrial robot.
While its speed is restricted for safety, this design allows for quicker, more versatile programming that can be handled more easily. This makes it an ideal solution for a wider range of tasks, particularly in batch production where agility is key.
[H2] PRECISION AND REPEATABILITY: THE CUSTOMER BENEFITS
The primary vision for this new industrial robot welding technology is to batch-build sub-assembly fabrications with greater precision. By using multi-position fixturing, the cobot will ensure that every single weld maintains consistent parameters and accuracy.
This manufacturing innovation is a game-changer for our customers, providing benefits like:
- Consistent quality
- Increased speed
- Enhanced finish
This collaborative robot in manufacturing will also allow ADM to expand our capabilities and take on new types of work and sectors, delivering a consistent, high-quality product on-time, every time.
[H2] YOUNG TALENT: OUR COMMITMENT TO SKILLS DEVELOPMENT IN ENGINEERING
This investment is not just about technology, it’s about people. Nathan Younger, one of our manufacturing engineers, has been selected as ADM’s Cobot Champion.
Reporting to Production Director Glenn Whelan, who was instrumental in initiating the cobot trial, Nathan’s new role is a reflection of ADM’s commitment to supporting young talent and driving improvement through innovation.
Nathan has been at the forefront of the project, undergoing dedicated training and providing crucial hands-on feedback. This practical experience is vital in modern manufacturing, where technology is constantly evolving.
[H2] MANUFACTURING CAREER GROWTH BY UPSKILLING STAFF IN AUTOMATION
ADM’s approach to upskilling staff in automation is part of our culture of professional development. We’re committed to ensuring that a career in manufacturing delivers personal growth and exciting opportunities to work with cutting-edge technologies.
By investing in our team’s skills development in engineering and giving them ownership of new technologies we are not just improving our output we are shaping the future of our workforce, ensuring our position as a leader in a dynamic industry.
